What is a 32-inch (32er) gravel rim?

A 32-inch rim is built around a larger bead-seat diameter (BSD) than a 700C or 29er rim. The ORNAN G27-45 has a BSD of 696mm, compared to 622mm for 700C/29er. Fitted with a 32 x 2.4 inch tire, the wheel measures roughly 818mm in outside diameter, about 10% larger than a 29er. Because the bead seat is different, 32-inch is a separate platform: rim, tire and frame all have to be built for it.

Can I fit a 700C or 29er tire on a 32-inch rim?

No. A 700C or 29er tire has a 622mm bead seat and cannot mount to the G27-45's 696mm bead seat. The tire must be marked for 696mm, shown as an ETRTO marking such as 60-696 on the sidewall. Never select a 32-inch tire by the nominal inch label alone.

What 32-inch tires are actually available right now?

Maxxis and Vittoria both offer 32 x 2.4 inch models, Teravail has announced gravel treads in the 2.2 inch range, and Schwalbe has confirmed a 32-inch gravel tire in development. The G27-45 is designed around a 2.0 to 2.75 inch tire range, covering the current 32-inch gravel options. Contact ORNAN to confirm fit for a specific tire.

Will 32-inch wheels fit my current gravel frame?

Almost certainly not. A 32 x 2.4 inch wheel is roughly 818mm in diameter versus about 750mm for a 29 x 2.6 inch. Some rigid forks with 29+ clearance can take a 32-inch front wheel, but the rear triangle is the hard limit. The platform is arriving through purpose-built 32-inch frames rather than upgrades.

Why 27mm internal width instead of 30mm or wider?

Most 32-inch rims available today were designed for XC and all-mountain use, with 30 to 37mm internal widths. At 27mm internal and 33mm external, the G27-45 is matched to gravel and drop-bar tire widths: enough sidewall support for a 2.0 to 2.75 inch tire at low pressure, without the weight and mounted-width penalty of a mountain rim.

Are 32-inch wheels flexy because the spokes are longer?

Lateral stiffness is the central engineering challenge of the 32-inch platform. The G27-45's 45mm rim depth reduces the required spoke length back toward that of a shallow 29er wheel, and the 2.8mm asymmetric offset moves the spoke bed off the centerline to even out bracing angles and spoke tension between drive and non-drive sides. Spoke hole count is customizable, so heavier riders can run more spokes.

Where do I get spokes for a 32-inch wheel?

Spoke length is the practical headache of the 32-inch platform. The G27-45's ERD is 618mm including nipple, and ORNAN builds complete 32-inch wheelsets in-house on its own hub brand, with both steel-spoke and carbon-spoke hub options. Lacing, spoke length calculation and tensioning are handled by ORNAN.

Which weight grade of the G27-45 should I choose?

All three grades share the same 27/33mm profile, 45mm depth and 618mm ERD; only the carbon layup changes. Standard: Toray T700 and T800, 520 +/-15g, rider limit 140kg. Flyweight: Toray T800 and T1000, 470 +/-15g, rider limit 120kg. Ultralight: Toray T1100, 430 +15g, rider limit 100kg. Choose by rider weight and terrain; the weight limits are system limits.

Should I choose the hooked or hookless version?

Both share the same profile. The G27-45CH (hooked) accepts a broader range of tires and is the safer default if the tire choice is not fixed. The G27-45C (hookless) is slightly lighter with a cleaner tire-to-rim interface and must only be used with tires approved for hookless rims. Maximum tire pressure is 35psi / 2.41bar on both versions.

Is the G27-45 tubeless ready, and what is the spoke tension limit?

Both the hooked and hookless versions are tubeless ready when used with compatible rim tape, valves, sealant and an approved tire. Maximum spoke tension is 130kgf or less. Where the tire manufacturer states a lower pressure limit than the rim, follow the lower figure.
